Coral Reefs? What are they? (Part 1)

Hello! Welcome to this first online class! This is for you to keep up with the work we've been doing in class, so let's get to it!


During these lessons, you will have to imagine that you are a marine biologist working in an aquarium. You will be working in the aquarium and then you will have to prepare to give a talk to girls from 6th grade in Instituto Aleluya. Let's get to work!

  • Where do fish live? Do you think they live in Coral Reefs? 
  • But most importantly... What are Coral Reefs?




Useful information!!

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, housing tens of thousands of marine species. About one-third of all marine fish species lives part of their lives on coral reefs. In addition to their incredible value as wildlife habitat, coral reefs protect coastlines from storms and provide billions of dollars of food and jobs every year to people around the world. 

  • Activity 1: Beginning the topic
Now think about the benefits and the dangers that coral reefs might face. In your notebook write a chart to make this activity.

We are going to read a text about the benefits and the dangers of coral reefs...
... but before! 
  • Activity 2 (Before reading):
You will come across some words in the text that you won't understand...
  • What do these words mean?  Match the pictures with the correct word. Write them in your notebook.

  • Activity 2 (part 1):
Now, while reading the text pay special attention to the benefits of Coral reefs and the dangers. Identify in your notebook at least two of each.

  • Activity 2 (part 2):

To finish this activity, think that you are one of the biologists and people comment on this text. Some of the things they say are TRUE, but some of them are FALSE. Identify them and correct the FALSE statements so people know the truth about Coral Reefs.

  • Corals are composed of a lot of polyps. 
  • Corals are not useful for medicines. 
  • Coral reefs attract few tourists. 
  • Bad weather can affect and harm the corals. 
  • Some fish and other animals aren’t a threat to corals. 

  • Activity 3 (part 1):
  • Now think! What benefits do you think that Coral reefs have for our cities?

You are going to listen to Mr. Jones, a marine biologist who works at an aquarium and Stacey, an 11-year-old girl who wants to know more about coral reefs, but some of the words they say were washed away… can you help them and complete the sentences with the missing words? Write them in your notebook.

S: Hello Mr Jones, how are you? I want to learn more about ______________ (1) and the teacher told me to ask you about it.

J: Oh yes, sure! No problem at all! What do you want to know, Stacey?
S: I watched a movie the other day, and the character lived in a coral reef. It was a fish. I would like to know about the ______________ (2) of the place where he lived.
J:Okay, so there are ________ (3) clear benefits of coral reefs. Do you know any?
S: No, I’m not really sure. Can you tell me about them?
J: Certainly! One of the benefits is to help the biodiversity…
S: Bio what?
J: Biodiversity. In this movie, did the fish live alone in the coral reef?
S: No, there were lots of fish and plants.
J: Exactly, Coral reefs help these fish and plants to live near them and the fish and plants provide the food for them. There are more than ________________ (4) species of different fish living in coral reefs.
S: Wow! That’s a lot. Could you please tell me more about it?
J: These fish living near coral reefs are some of the ones we can eat, so coral reefs are also beneficial for ______________ (5).
S: I don’t like eating fish so much… but my _______________ (6) insists on feeding me every now and then…
J: Yes, you should… fish are ______________ (7) and are good for our health, and so are coral reefs!
S: How can coral reefs be good for our health?
J: Well, you see… coral reefs sometimes try to defend themselves from the _______________ (8) around them, and they use chemical substances that they produce. These substances are also used to treat several illnesses, like cancer, heart attacks, and different viruses. Also new _________________ (9) are being developed from coral reefs and the plants living near them.
S: Excellent! I would like to see a coral reef soon!
J: Well, maybe you can… another benefit of coral reefs is that they are ______________ (10)  spots to visit. Many people go scuba diving and they see the coral reefs and their beautiful colours. It’s extremely beautiful to see one.
S: Have you ever seen one?
J: Yes, many times! Also, many people go to the beaches near them.
S: Maybe I’ll go there! But is it safe?
J: Yes, totally and that leads me to the last benefit I know! Coral reefs help to protect the ______________ (11).
S: The coasts? How is that so?
J: Well, coral reefs are very strong structures, and they make the waves of the ocean go back and this makes the coasts safer. Imagine if the water from the ocean got to our _______________ (12)… we would all drown! Coral reefs help us a lot to be safer near the coasts.
S: Oh my God! I didn’t know that! They are very useful!
J: Yes, they are! That’s why we need to protect them.
S: How can we do that, Mr. Jones? I want to help defend the coral reefs!
J: Well Stacey, there are lots and lots of things we can do to help them! We can help to reduce the amount of water we use, and to reduce pollution. There are also many programs in which there are volunteers to clean coral reefs!
S: Oh great! I think I will do that! __________ _______ (13) very much, Mr. Jones! You are great!
J: No, thank you, Stacey! See you around!
S: Bye!

Now, and to finish this lesson, let's answer some questions about this activity. You will have to write the answers in your notebook.

  • Do you like eating fish? Do you think they are good for our health? Why (not)? 
  • Why should we help defend Coral Reefs? 
  • What can we do to help?

Finding a solution and also Nemo. (Part 2)

Hello! Welcome to this second part of the lesson on Coral Reefs. Let's start off simple and fun!
  • Activity 1 (Part 1):
  • Have you ever seen Finding Nemo? Can you remember where he lived?


We are going to watch a video called: "Finding Nemo - Exploring the reef"
But first!


  • What do you think we are going to learn by watching this video? Which characters do you think that will appear? Write your ideas on your notebook.
  • Activity 2 (Part 1):
As you watch the video, take down some notes on the following aspects:

  • The time that takes for a Coral to grow
  • Food that Coral eat
  • Clown fish: Where do they live and why?
  • Water cycle
  • ¿What happens when Coral Reefs turn white?

  • What happens when Coral Reefs are sick? Why? Write your ideas on your notebook.


Look at this two images closely. 

  • Which are the differences between them? Make a list of what you can see that's different in both. 






  • What things have you learnt that could be the cause of this? How would you help to fix it? Write your ideas in your notebook.
  • Activity 2 (Part 2):

Do you remember that you have to imagine that you were Marine Biologists? Okay! Let's get to work Biologists! You have been invited to Aleluya's school (specifically 6th grade) to give a presentation on Coral Reefs, the threats they face and also to give tips to help defend Coral Reefs.


  • You have to create a poster to tell the students about the threats and possible solutions to help Coral Reefs! You will have to work now because you will then, present it in class... and maybe the whole school!
